Colleen Plumb’s monograph Animals Are Outside Today was recently featured in Lenscratch, Knight Foundation Blog, and the Spanish magazine Nagari.
Animals Are Outside Today offers us the chance to contemplate our intersections with animals and consider the multi-layered impact humans have upon other living beings. Contradictions define our relationships with animals. We love and admire them; we are entertained and fascinated by them; we take our children to watch and learn about them. Animals are embedded within the core of human history—evident in our stories, rituals and symbols. At the same time, we eat, wear and cage them with seeming indifference, consuming them in countless ways. This book moves within these contradictions, always questioning if the notion of sacred will survive alongside our evolution.

A one-person exhibition of Colleen Plumb’s photographs from her forthcoming Fall 2011 book, Animals Are Outside Today, will take place at Jen Bekman Gallery in New York City from March 12 to April 24, 2011. The opening reception will be held at the gallery on March 18, 6–8pm.
Plumb describes this body of work thus:
I began this project in 1997 looking at ‘fake nature’, wondering what substitutions for nature can satisfy in people… This series of photographs examines the essence of our connection, as well as our fragmentation from the natural. I am interested in the ever increasing disconnection that exists between humans and the natural world. The work explores simulation, consumption, destruction, and reconstruction as well as notions of endurance and the reality of loss.
Colleen Plumb’s work is held in several photography collections including the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, Milwaukee Art Museum, the Southeast Museum of Photography in Daytona Beach, Florida, Fidelity Investments, in Boston and Beijing Natural Cultural Center, China. Her photographs have been exhibited nationwide in many one person and group exhibits, and have been widely showcased in books and publications such as PDN and Hotshoe International. Plumb currently teaches in the Photography Department at Columbia College Chicago. This is her first monograph.
