Janet Russek: The Tenuous Stem
Book signing and exhibition
Tuesday, November 26 from 4-6pm
RADIUS BOOKS Studio
227 East Palace Avenue, Suite W
Radius Books will host a book signing and exhibition opening for Santa Fe photographer Janet Russek in celebration of the of her new retrospective book, The Tenuous Stem.
The poignancy and promise of the life cycle informs Janet Russek’s long term photographic project, The Tenuous Stem. In 1989, Eliot Porter—her mentor and friend—gave her a monorail camera. The camera was too unwieldy for anything but studio work, and although she has always worked with 4 x 5 cameras, she set up still lifes for the first time in 1993 to use it in her studio. More…
For four years Justin Kimball accompanied his brother Doug, an auctioneer, into the houses of the recently deceased or dispersed. While Doug cleared these spaces of items for potential resale, Justin sought within them the evidence of an individual’s life. Photographing the smallest objects, he reimagined their existence and relationship to their absent owners. “I use the camera’s descriptive power and the photographic illusion of truth to create the narrative and inspire feelings about its subject,” he writes of these images. “The resulting photographs are my perception of what happened in those spaces: who lived there? What was hidden and what was seen?”

We did the initial tests with Gay in the studio this week (the above are examples), and we think they look great – really cool, with a vintage vibe. Come get yours tomorrow night, and help fund our donation programs in 2012.
And if you haven’t been by yet – come tomorrow anytime from 10 am to 7 pm for the last day of our book sale.
For one week just before the holidays, we are turning our studio into a bookstore! Our books will be offered at a 25% discount, including all our titles – even the newest releases. This is the only time of year that we have a sale. So if you can’t make it by the studio, then visit us on-line during the same days for the same discounts (with time still left to ship before the holidays).
On the last night of the sale join us for our holiday party from 4 to 7pm. We’ll be serving festive food and drinks, and during the party we will hold our first ever Polaroid Project.
