Clement Greenberg once said of the young Otto Rogers, that he is “an artist of amazing talent, worthy of an international reputation.” Widely collected throughout the entire breadth of Canada, Otto Rogers is considered one of that country’s mature, leading artists. His work is an inspired exploration of landscape and abstraction, rooted in a profound understanding of the history of modern art. Rogers’ own personal beliefs in the transcendence of the soul and the physical world as a reflection of spiritual realms have always factored heavily in his work, lending an exquisite dimension of refinement and subtlety to his paintings.

This first major monograph will make his work accessible to a wide-ranging audience. Beloved to his students and known as an engaging public speaker, Rogers contributes an essay that interweaves his ideas about art and both artistic and spiritual practice, shedding illumination on his entire process.

About the Artist

Otto Donald Rogers was born on the plains of Saskatchewan, in the town of Kerrobert in 1935. He received his Master of Science in Fine Art from the University of Wisconsin in 1959. In the same year, he began teaching at the University of Saskatchewan, where he served as department head from 1973-1978. Over the past 50 years, Rogers has had solo exhibitions on the average of one per year. His work can be found in the collections of every major Canadian institution, including the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, the Nickel Arts Museum, Calgary, and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts as well as the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in the USA. His work is represented in over 60 corporate collections across North America. Currently, the artist lives in Prince Edward County in southern Ontario.

Sir Anthony Caro has been a key figure in contemporary sculpture since his groundbreaking show at the Whitechapel London Gallery in 1963.

Sky Glabush is an associate professor of painting and drawing at the University of Western Ontario. Glabush received his MFA from the University of Alberta, and writes for leading art magazines such as Border Crossings and Canadian Art.
