ABOUT THE BOOK

“Nature is not always the nice redemptive thing we have assumed.”Michael Lundgren

Matter is culled from nine years of picture making, a tightly woven sequence conjuring elements of the supernatural across multiple terrains. Carrying a metaphoric visual trope throughout, the photographs depart from the confines of the descriptive landscape. Rendering cultural and natural transformations democratically, Matter reveals an unaccountable world where water seeps red, cement cubes fall from the sky, and green foxes are unearthed.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Michael Lundgren works collaboratively with artists, scientists, and writers on historically and socially engaged bodies of work, but his true passion is the poetic potential of the medium. His practice layers both digital and analogue technologies, employing manipulation within the camera, the darkroom and the computer. Previous publications include Transfigurations (Radius Books, 2008) and After the Ruins: Rephotographing the San Francisco Earthquake (University of California Press, 2006) co-authored with photographer Mark Klett. Lundgren’s work resides in the esteemed collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London; the Museum of Photographic Arts in California; the Fralin Museum in Virginia; the Brandts Museum of Photographic Art in Denmark, and in numerous private collections.
