Bill Jacobson: Place (Series) showcases the acclaimed photographer’s newest body of work, for which he won a 2012 Guggenheim Fellowship. The artist describes the images as “the result of inserting rectangles of various sizes and surfaces within both constructed and natural settings. They question what is ‘real’ and what is ‘abstract’, while suggesting that the creation of place is constant, stemming from need, choice, and desire.”

As opposed to the out-of-focus work for which he initially became known, these photographs speak to our perceptual interactions with the physical world that surrounds us. They are based on the idea that we live in a world of infinite images, while denying boundaries between interior and exterior, known and unknown, color swatch and landscape.

Spanning a career of over 40 years, Bill Jacobson’s work is represented in private and public collections internationally, including the Guggenheim Museum; the Whitney Museum; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Victoria and Albert Museum; among many others. Jacobson has received fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation (2012), the Aaron Siskind Foundation (1995), and the New York Foundation for the Arts (1994). Since 2007 he has taught in the Bard/ICP MFA program based in New York City. Place (Series) is his fourth monograph.

Maureen N. McLane is a poet and essayist. Among her publications are three books of poems, most recently This Blue (FSG, 2014), and an experimental hybrid of memoir and criticism, My Poets (FSG, 2012), which was a Finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award.
