Deluxe Edition – Janelle Lynch: Another Way of Looking at Love

Janelle Lynch New Limited Edition and Cord Prize Shortlist

Wall II

“Janelle Lynch’s book is brave and true. But hold on to your heart. Its quiet passion sneaks up and steals your soul.” — Tony Bannon, Director, Burchfield Penney Art Center, Buffalo, NY

Radius announces a new limited edition, which is also the cover image for the forthcoming title Janelle Lynch: Barcelona. It is a 16 x 20 inch inkjet print, “Wall II,” edition of 20, image above. Sales help support the publication.

In addition, Janelle Lynch’s photographic work from the book has been shortlisted for The Cord Prize juried by Diana Edkins and Charlotte Cotton. This is the inaugural prize for a new annual international contemporary art award. You can visit an online exhibition of the 25 selected artists here.

The book developed from Lynch’s exploration of the fallow landscape outside of Barcelona from 2007 to 2011. With her 8×10-inch camera and a portrait lens, the artist photographed pylons, puddles, leaves, and litter as metaphors for themes of absence and presence, mourning and remembrance. Following the success of Los Jardines de México (Radius Books, 2011), Barcelona continues Lynch’s long-term interest in representations of the life cycle in the landscape. Included with the five series of images that comprise this remarkable new project are writings in English and Spanish by the artist. The book begins with a personal essay about Lynch’s early relationship with nature. Woven throughout the remaining pages are text about and quotes from Charles Burchfield, Wendell Berry and Roland Barthes, whose works have been influential in Lynch’s process.

In her spare images of unpeopled landscapes, photographer Janelle Lynch explores themes of death, regeneration, and preservation[…] Simultaneously celebratory and sad, the photographs embrace loss as a necessary facilitator of growth.
